European Parliament Declares Technical Support to PAP
On 6 May 2016, Co-Chairs Hon, Michael Gahler, leader of the European Parliamentary Delegation and H.E. Hon. Roger Nkodo Dang, President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) signed a draft declaration on the European Parliament’s technical support to PAP.
The initiative follows a decision by the European Parliament’s Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) on 26 November 2015 to designate the PAP as a priority parliament for the European Parliament’s democracy support activities. Potential areas of support include budget and budgetary control, governance, election observation, the Joint Africa-Europe Strategy (JAES), legislative drafting and research facilities for members. The overall objective of these activities is to assist the PAP to develop the skills and competencies that are required to function as a full legislative body.
Hon Michael Gahler thanked the PAP for the opportunity to confirm the cooperation between the two bodies on a political and administrative level. “We will use our channels to connect with individual parliaments in Africa to push for the ratification of the protocol,” he stated.
