African Speakers and Clerks of Parliaments convene at the Pan-African Parliament

The Pan-African Parliament President, the Rt. Hon. Roger Nkodo DANG officiated the third meeting of the association of Clerks of African National Assemblies and Senates on 5 August 2019 in Midrand, urging delegates to assist in pioneering a “united and progressive Africa.”

“We need you as Clerks of national parliaments to establish a unitary and functional Continent,” he said while addressing the conference running alongside the Sitting of the Permanent Committees of the fifth Parliament. PAP will also host Speakers of National Assemblies and Senates from 06 August 2019.

The conference is held under the theme, “towards durable solutions to forced migration to accelerate integration and development in Africa; role of national and regional parliaments.”

Warning delegates on the acts of sabotage against Africa and its development-driven Executive Institutions, the PAP President also urges national parliaments to shape a better continent for all Africans. “We rely on you. As the PAP, we are here to partner with you,” the Rt. Hon. Nkodo DANG said, also urging Clerks to lobby their parliaments and countries to ratify all outstanding protocols by the African Union at various levels.

“As our Clerks of Parliaments, we rely on you to get all protocols ratified. I believe that if you are to walk out of this conference having taken a stand to prioritise the ratification of protocols, you will have done well for Africa,” added President Nkodo DANG.

Among others, both the Clerks and Speakers Conferences are expected to result in establishment of a solid link between PAP and national and regional parliaments in order to enable the Continental Parliament to play an active and proactive role in preventing and ending forced migration in Africa and promoting parliamentary action for the rapid ratification, reception and implementation of AU treaties relating to forced migration, silencing of guns and realization of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
